The Pantaleo forest covers no less than 4,231 hectares in the territories of Santadi and Nuxis, and together with the surrounding woodlands forms a nature area stretching over 22,000 hectares which is the heart of the Sulcis Nature Park. Part of the forest, about 1,600 hectares, is a wildlife sanctuary where all hunting is forbidden. The thick vegetation consists mainly of holm oak coppice with brush and/or cork trees. Pantaleo also has the largest pure holm oak wood in the world. The habitat is excellent for many species, including the Sardinian deer, fallow deer, wild cat, fox and weasel. There are also many bird species, for the most part migratory. Amongst the raptors, the golden eagle, the goshawk, the sparrow-hawk and the peregrine falcon nest here.
